About Medicare in Colorado

Americans over the age of 65, as well as some younger people, are eligible for Medicare. It is a social health insurance program, and in addition to the elderly, it also covers people who suffer from certain types of disability, as well as end-stage renal disease, commonly referred to as kidney failure. It is not a comprehensive health care insurance, as it only covers a portion of most medical bills. Many people who are on Medicare use it to supplement their coverage through a private health care insurance provider, as well as receiving benefits through Social Security Disability Insurance.

There are four components to Medicare coverage:

Part A is also referred to as Hospital Insurance, and it provides coverage for inpatient care received as a hospital patient, as well as for care received in nursing facility, home care and hospice care.

Part B is referred to as Medical Insurance, and it is typically provided in conjunction with coverage through Part A. For Part B, you will have to pay a monthly premium, the amount of which may be higher if you are a high wage earner.

Part C is referred to as Medicare Advantage, and it is available if you are receiving coverage through Parts A and B. Part C is provided through your employer, and there are several different types of plans available. This coverage can help by e.g. paying for a continued hospital stay after your primary Medicare coverage has run out.

Part D is referred to as Prescription Drug Coverage, and it is available for a premium which you pay in addition to your payments for other types of Medicare coverage. Part D helps to pay for certain types of medications, with each drug assigned to one of several price tiers.
