Types of Accidents & Injuries

What types of workplace accidents are most common?

According to information provided by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were a total of 80 workplace fatalities in Colorado in 2010, a figure which represents the second-lowest rate in the past two decades. The number of fatal workplace accidents in Colorado accounted for only 1.7% of all such accidents nationwide.

The leading cause of death on the job was highway accidents, which accounted for 21% of cases, while the next most common causes were self-inflicted injuries, being struck by an object or equipment, and falls from heights. The construction industry is particularly dangerous for workers: In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that 17.5% of all fatal workplace accidents nationwide in 2011 occurred in the construction industry.

Of these, nearly three-fifths were one of the "fatal four," which include:

  • Falls
  • Electrocutions
  • Being struck by an object
  • Being caught in or between objects or machinery

While certain types of incidents such as slip and fall accidents, traffic collisions, and being struck by an object may be more common than others, you can file a claim for workers' compensation for nearly any accident on the job. Retaining a Colorado Springs workers' comp attorney can help you ensure that you fill out all necessary paperwork to correctly file your claim and avoid a denial of benefits.

Other Types of Workplace Injuries

It is also possible to claim benefits for an occupational disease after suffering from toxic exposure in the course of performing your job duties, such as if you have to handle benzene or similarly hazardous substances or if you have developed mesothelioma after breathing in asbestos fibers. Workers' compensation claims may also be filed in cases of repetitive strain injury if, for example, you have developed a back injury or carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of the conditions of your work.
